Here is one of my favorite conversations from Guatemala. I was talking with my friend Danilo, who is 25 and grew up in a small village in the mountains. He told me that all his life, he had wanted a foreigner friend, and I was his first one! Danilo did not speak of lick of English, but I translated the below for my English-reading friends.
Danilo: Tell me about your country.
Me: My country is really big. I'll tell you about my city.
Danilo: OK.
Me (Looking around for inspiration of something to talk about and seeing people pass by): Well, we don't walk everywhere.
Danilo: Then how do you get around?
Me: We go in cars.
Danilo (suddenly keenly interested and leaning forward with eyebrows raised): Sharon! YOU KNOW HOW TO DRIVE?!?!?!
He was so shocked, I didn't have the heart to tell him I own my own car!
