A Role to Play

When I came back to Dallas after being in Guatemala for 10 weeks, I'll be honest, it was hard.

In Guate, I had had a role. I was an American. I was a volunteer. I was a dance instructor. I was someone's first foreigner friend. I was different from other tourists (a local's words, not mine). I was a salsa dancer. I was free to talk about my faith. (Once we got past the fact that I was not a fan of  building snazzy cathedrals on the backs of people who don't have enough to eat, the conversations became real.) Anyway, the point is that I had come to really enjoy the people I was spending time with.

When I got back to Dallas, I found myself with good friends whom I had dearly missed. Yet it was hard not to have the same role to play. I liked my Guatemalan roles. Thankfully, after a few weeks stateside, I realize that I have a role here, too. There is still much to be determined as God has a way of not telling everything at once. He gives what we are ready for when we are ready, and I am content with that. I am beginning to like my Dallas role again.
