In the Bible, I have been reading the book of John, and I see that over and over again, Jesus reiterates that He is not just doing whatever He wants. He is doing what the Father wants.
4:34 “My food is to do the will of Him Who sent Me and to accomplish His work. “
5:19 “Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.”
5:30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative… I do not seek My own will but the will of Him Who sent Me.”
6:38 “For I have come down from Heaven not to do My own will but the will of Him Who sent me.”
7:16 “My teaching is not Mine but His Who sent me.”
7:18 “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”
8:26 “He who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.”
These verses remind me to stay focused on why I’m here. They help me not be distracted by all the well… distractions available in a tourist town. I am not my own. And I prefer it that way. I’d rather live for an Almighty Sovereign Lord who has the whole world in His hands and knows what’s best. Oh, that I would serve Him and not miss out on the abundant life He offers because of my own selfishness.
