My Mom is here! Hip hip hooray! She arrived safely during a torrential downpour and wondered why I hadn't given her a better idea of "rainy season" here. I told her it's not usually this bad. Her arrival day was the worst it's rained the whole time I've been here. It was raining when I woke up, never stopped even for a minute, and was still raining when we went to sleep.
Part of my plan for Mom's visit was to go to a famous lake in the area. We were supposed to leave tomorrow but found out yesterday the roads are closed due to a mudslide. I have learned enough lately to know that "mudslide" here means the road disappeared, not just got muddy. I have seen and heard of damage from previous mudslides that have happened recently, but I had no idea the extent of the damage until I saw this article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lt_guatemala_mudslides. It's bad. Very bad. This weekend, during the storm that frustrated me because I was walking in streets filled with water to my calves, other people got covered in mud and lost their lives. It's sobering.
Mom and I have decided to stay put and not travel around as planned. It's dangerous to be on highways right now.
I know I ask for prayer for safety a lot, but here's one more: please pray for road safety in Guatemala.
