The World is Small; God is Big

As the world gets smaller, God gets bigger.

Tonight I hung out with a friend I haven’t seen in 8 years. She had plans to come to Antigua this week, and found out from another friend whom I also haven’t talked to in years that I was here. We all worked at a camp together in 2002. One girl saw on Facebook that I was in Antigua and told the girl I saw tonight, who promptly contacted me on Facebook, and days later, I was reunited in Guatemala with a fellow camp counselor from my college days.

But the world gets smaller. Through a friend of a friend of a friend, she had been put in touch, through Facebook, with a guy who is the director of an organization down here. So I met up with her, and then we went to meet up with him. When I met him, he recognized me and said, “Hey, I’ve seen you around. In Café Barista.” Recognizing him as well, I replied, “Yeah, I watched your computer while you went to the bathroom!” (We were both using the Internet in a café a few weeks ago, and hey, you make friends when you are alone and need help.) But we had not actually talked or learned anything about each other. It turns out he works in the same nearby town as me! And like me, he has had lots of opportunities to share the Gospel but has struggled with the lack of Christian community here.

How crazy that a girl I hardly knew 8 years ago would be the person to introduce me to the guy whose computer I watched who happened to be in need of a Christian friend.

He walked me home (an answer to prayer because I left the house today not knowing who was going to walk me home), and during the long walk that I have actually come to look forward to, we were able to tell a bit of our stories and encourage each other as brother and sister in Christ.

I don’t know why we didn’t get to know each other sooner. He would have been a nice friend to have here. I guess God had other plans for us in those weeks.
