I am in Guatemala City for the weekend staying with some missionaries, and you know what they have? A couch! A place to actually sit and spend time with people! Yeay!
And you know what else they have? Temperature controls in the shower! I can actually choose whether I want the water more warm or more cool! In Antigua my house has on and off. I’m just glad it’s running water.
The amenities continue with one of my personal favorites: Internet! In the house! Hooray!
And you know what else I got to do? Eat a strawberry! Generally, I have to stay away from fruits where you eat the skin. Things you peel like oranges and bananas are OK, but not strawberries. Here, I could properly wash the fruit, so I got to indulge. Yeay!
And I must mention one more thing: the ability to do some things for myself in the kitchen. After we ate dinner last night, I was so excited to clear the table and rinse the dishes. That may sound silly, but in Antigua, the family I stay with runs it like a hotel. The whole first week, she wouldn’t even let me take my plate to the kitchen. The mom would take it out of my hand. I am now allowed to clear my own stuff, but I can’t wash them because…well…I don’t know how. (There is a big concrete square sink, but no faucet. They haven’t shown me how it works. I finally figured out there is a lower level of sink next to the big one, and it has buckets for scooping water to rinse the dishes in the big sink, but I still haven’t figured out how the water gets there in the first place.)
Last night, the opportunity to take care of some domestic things for myself was just too much…and it was manifested in a little victory dance in the kitchen. Seriously. I was jumping up and down like you do when you are at a live football game and your team wins. I don’t feel homesick. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. But feeling capable and free to wash a dish for myself is apparently incredibly exciting.
