God Bless Reefs

Walking. My feet are covered in band-aids and are wondering what happened. I don’t think I’ve ever walked so much in a few days in regular shoes (I’m excluding hiking excursions where my feet are generally well-cushioned on all sides). To top it off, I had the genius idea to break in a new pair of shoes, which always causes blisters anyway. Now, it hurts to wear anything but flip flops. Moleskin didn’t help, which is highly unusual. It doesn’t help that the streets are rocks. Not just cobblestone, but chunks of rock stuck in cement and called a street.

I figured out today that it takes a solid 30 minutes to walk directly to my house from the open-air market on the other side of town. That market one of my favorite places, and it is near the McDonalds, so I have made the trip often. And I’m usually zig-zagging around the streets going in and out of little shops and trying to get oriented with landmarks, so it takes longer. Lots of time spent on my feet. Lots of time spent on the street. (I couldn’t help myself because it rhymed.)

In Mexico, we took buses and taxis. In Europe, we took trains. In Indonesia, we took public cars. In the United States, a metro or a car is usually involved. Here in Antigua, we walk. Hello calf muscles.
