Reflections on Camp in Rio Hondo

Camp in Rio Hondo is now over. It never ceased to amaze me how the campers welcomed us with open arms and hearts even though we couldn’t have fluid conversations with them! I think we all became adept at telling the kids to get in line, pay attention, and be quiet. I think we were also pretty good at asking how they were, who was whose sister/cousin/niece, and whether they already have a food ticket. But those topics are not what we came here for. Somehow, I believe God used us. Somehow, He reached people He loves. Somehow, they were inspired to spend time with us and learn from us and pay attention to us even though we only come once a year.

I don’t think it has anything to do with us. Yes, a bunch of Gringos are quite a spectacle. But there was more. They listened. They were open to talking about life and God. I know of at least one boy who accepted Christ this week. That didn’t happen just because a bunch of Americans came to hang out. That happened because God is moving here and drawing people to Himself. And those who are already His received encouragement and encouraged me.

One of my favorite parts of camp was seeing so many members of the body of Christ work together. Singles, couples, kids, adults, Americans, Mexicans, El Salvadorians, etc… It is wonderful to know that regardless of where we come from, God is everywhere and in all of us and moves all of us toward the same goal—Him.

Hallelujah!
